Deadly Fox Tapeworm Detected in West Coast Wildlife: What You Need to Know (2026)

The recent detection of the deadly 'fox tapeworm' in West Coast wildlife has raised concerns about the potential spread of a rare and lethal disease in humans. This parasitic tapeworm, known as Echinococcus multilocularis, has been found in 37 out of 100 coyotes near Puget Sound in Washington State, marking the first time it has been identified in the region. The discovery is particularly significant as it highlights the expanding range of this parasite, which was once rare in North America. As lead author Yasmine Hentati explains, the high prevalence of the tapeworm in coyotes is due to their diet of raw rodents, which are the primary source of infection. The genetic testing revealed a newer, more infectious European variant that has become dominant in the U.S. and Canada.

What makes this issue even more concerning is the potential for human infection. The tapeworm is transmitted among wild canids, cycling from foxes to rodents and back to foxes. Humans can contract the infection by accidentally ingesting worm eggs from contaminated soil or food, or by handling a pet with the tapeworm and then touching their mouth. The symptoms of echinococcosis, the disease caused by the tapeworm, can include fluid-filled sacs called cysts in the liver or lungs, leading to abdominal pain, increased belly size, or coughing and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the infection can become life-threatening, especially with the rarer alveolar echinococcosis form, which can mimic cancer and lead to liver failure.

Despite the low risk to the general public, as infectious disease specialist Dr. Linda Yancey notes, the presence of the tapeworm in wildlife and the potential for human infection warrants caution. Simple precautions, such as good hand hygiene, are recommended to reduce exposure. Dog owners, in particular, should prevent their pets from eating wild rodents and ensure routine veterinary care. The CDC also advises avoiding contact with wild animals that can carry the tapeworm, such as foxes, coyotes, and stray dogs. This discovery serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring and managing parasitic infections in wildlife to protect both animal and human health.
